A North East Landmark
We are custodians of Neville Hall, historically the home of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers since 1872. This architectural gem once echoed with the hustle and bustle of mining innovation.
The Common Room formed as a charity in 2017 to restore Neville Hall in Newcastle, a grade II* listed building. The building's archive and heritage is now being utilised to inspire the next generation of engineers and innovators.
We also offer our unique heritage spaces to public for collaboration, events, lectures, weddings and more.

From 2018-2022 we undertook large capital works project to restore Neville Hall as a home for The Common Room, ensuring it remains a resource for future generations, and a space for the common good.
We support the equity of knowledge around our region’s industrial past using our building’s history and archive collections. It is our aim to support young people in their transition into further education and the workforce through sustained creative engagement with STEM skills.
