This tour forms part of a week-long joint Buddle At 250 celebration in partnership between The Common Room and The Lit & Phil.
Meet us outside the Lit & Phil, for a tour around the local area, with commentary based on the innovative work of John Buddle, his contemporaries and others associated with the Lit & Phil. Get the chance to see the Lit & Phil’s newly restored portrait of Buddle, the work completed by Durham based conservator Angela McDowell. You will then be taken on a tour around the adjoining streets, ending up in Hanover Square.
Booking information
Each person attending, including adults accompanying children, must have their own ticket.
Tickets are free, but if you would like to make a small donation to support the charitable work of The Common Room, it would be hugely appreciated. Likewise, as an independent library, The Lit & Phil welcomes donations.
Attendees may also be interested in a Talk on Buddle’s Railways at 2pm the same day at The Common Room. (A separate booking for this talk is required)

About The Common Room
The Common Room is a charity formed in 2017 to restore the Grade II* listed Neville Hall in Newcastle upon Tyne (home to The North of England Institute for Mining and Mechanical Engineers since 1872), and its significant archive and collections documenting centuries of engineering, mining, and wider scientific innovation.
Thanks to National Lottery players, an £8.9m grant has enabled us to spend over £7 million restoring the building, and around £2m to support our running costs, preserve our collections, and to drive our mission: to use our unique heritage to inspire the next generation of innovators and engineers.
Complete with its own café bar, 5|Quarter (opened on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays), The Common Room is also available for hire for private events, including conferences, lectures, weddings, and gigs.

About The Lit & Phil
The Lit & Phil is Newcastle’s exquisite independent library, open to all and free to explore and browse. Founded in 1793, its purpose-built library opened in 1825 on Westgate Road, and is just yards from Central Station. It became a hub of learning and enlightenment long before the city’s universities existed and today continues to inspire minds, stimulate imaginations and confer a wealth of knowledge to young and old alike.
