Arthur Morton Hedley was born in Medomsley, County Durham, in 1872.
Hedley was manager of Priestman Collieries’ mines in the Blaydon area; the manager of the Hedley and East Hedley Hope Colliery between 1918 and 1925; and later was agent for Bolckow Vaughan & Co.’s ironstone mines in Cleveland and coal mines in Durham. He also worked as a consulting mining engineer.
Hedley became a member of North England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers in 1919 and was President from 1925 to 1927. He was also Vice-President of the Institution of Mining Engineers.
