Samuel Hare was born in Crook, Co. Durham in 1862 and began his mining career in Crook with Pease & Partners Ltd. In 1885 he was appointed Manager of a group of collieries in North Wales, subsequently acted in a similar capacity at Bedlington, Ravensworth and Birtley, and in 1901 was appointed by South Hetton Colliery Company Ltd., to the management of their Murton Colliery. Later he was Chief Agent and Chief Mining Engineer for Bolckow, Vaughan & Co.’s mines in the Bishop Auckland area.
Hare joined the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers as a student member in 1879; became a full member in 1891 and was President from 1923-24. He was also President of the National Association of Colliery Managers, Vice-President of the Institute of Mining Engineers and Vice-Chairman of the Central Mining Examination Board. He was a Justice of the Peace and was awarded the OBE in 1918.
Samuel Hare died in London in 1937 and is buried in Crook Cemetery
