Johnny Handle will be joined by Benny Graham, Jim Mageean, Ingrid and Barrie Temple who will perform a selection of songs and poems from the book Coalfields of
Song and Verse – a collection of coal mining songs and poems.

The book is history of the coal mining industry in the North East of England told by the voices of the workers and their families.

The selection was made by Johnny Handle who worked for thirteen years in Northumberland pits. A prominent local folk singer he discovered many of these fascinating
verses in libraries, museums, or in the performances by those with connections to the many villages dependent on mining.

A people’s chronicle of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries recording the tumult and energy of a past industrial age.
