About the Collection

This exhibition brings together photographs of women in shipbuilding and marine engineering in North East England in the First World War.

The portrait collection 'The Shipbuilding Industry in Britain 1914-1918' was captured by photographer Horace Nicholls, and is now housed in the Imperial War Museum Photograph Archive Collection. The exhibition also features aerial photographs from the Historic England Archive. The shots used were taken in the 1920s and 1930s, showing the shipyards and their surrounding communities alongside coal staithes and other quays and docks.
