The Colliery Guardian newspaper began publication in 1858 and provides a fantastic insight into the industry over time.

It includes adverts for every imaginable piece of mining machinery, longer editorial articles on new innovations and news from the coalfields of the UK and beyond.

Making our resources available

As one of our most popular, heavily used resources we are working towards digitising our copies of “Colliery Guardian”.

Volunteers are scanning and then using Optical Character Recognition to make the PDFs searchable. The individual JPG pages are also available on request if required. Work on this project has been delayed by Covid 19 but we hope to digitise our entire run. Please note that we do not hold volumes 9-13.
